There should be a /proc/config.gz for both the genkernel and hopefully your homebuilt. You should be able to copy both of these virtual files some were persistant and do a diff on them. Or copy the one from the CD boot into your source tree and then do a 'make menuconfig' or whatever. (start

_smart_. darryl, you rock. any progress is progress, imho. indeed, i can mount the dvd just fine if i boot from a cd with "docache," remove the livecd, and mount the dvd (as root) with mkdir /mnt/dvd mount /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/dvd ...said dvd will not mount when booted from installed system

I thought about that. The thing is that the manual says that the drive settles on a certain zone after five times. so maybe i did hose it that way? I have another box, but god knows if it'll boot. ;) Maybe the problem is a jumper setting (i was surprised to see the jumper at all on a sata driv
