Gentoo-PPC Meeting Topic Summary, May 29th 2005
1. Team Elections

The PPC team had some available positions which were filled uncontested.
Our structure is now as follows:

2. Pre-Release and 2005.1 Release
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We're expecting the 2005.1 release to occur sometime in late July or early
August. For this release, we'll be supporting a wider range of hardware than
previous LiveCDs. We would like to support: Old World Macs, New World Macs, IBM
PReP, and Pegasos machines. For Old World support we'll need to provide a boot
disk for booting without MacOS. An updated version of quik is already in the
portage tree. For IBM machines, we'll need to provide the correct kernel and
update instructions in the handbook.
In preparation for the release, we would like to look into providing LiveCDs for
the upcoming conferences. Also, we expect to have the PPC and PPC64 profile
merge completed before the 2005.1 release.
3. (Unofficial) Live/Game/Rescue CDs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The PPC had some concerns about the way pvdabeel's LiveCDs were presented.
pvdabeel has agreed to make them Apple compatible and notify the PPC team when a
new CD is available. The PPC team would like to make LiveCDs for the upcoming
conferences. Prompted by the current discussion on -dev, Pylon suggested that
we could also make a recovery CD available.
We will be putting up information about building LiveCDs and GameCDs on
ppc.gentoo.org. We also need to look into fixing genkernel to make a
zImage.initrd for booting on Pegasos.
4. PPC/PPC64 teams merge

The PPC/PPC64 merge is going well. Dostrow is currently working on adapting our
profiles to support both arches sanely. The merged profiles should be in the
portage tree in the next week. In addition to the merge, the PPC64 team is
currently working on multilib, but does not expect this to be ready for 2005.1.
5. Our stable kernel, Pegasos sources, PPC kernel maintainer

The PPC team is anticipating the release of 2.6.12 as this kernel has many
desired features for the ppc architecture, such as support for the new
PowerBooks, fixes for many issues related to sleep, as well as support for the
sound in the mini and compilation fixes for 32bit G5 kernels. We also spoke
about removing the Pegasos sources once the patchsets are rolled into the
vanilla kernel. Morfic has volunteered to be the PPC kernel maintainer and
JoseJX has volunteered to help him.
6. Altivec Support
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When altivec is used indiscriminately, code that doesn't support altivec is
built with altivec support with results that are less than optimal. Until GCC4
is more stable and autovectorization is more mature there isn't a satisfactory
solution to the altivec problem that doesn't involve per ebuild settings (which
isn't worth the effort).
7. binutils-2.16 and glibc-2.3.5
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As SpanKY recently noticed, PPC's glibc is currently broken. To fix this,
there are a few things that need to happen. First, our kernel headers need to
be fixed. See bug #94256. Once that is done, we need to reinstall binutils and
glibc. As testing hasn't shown significant problems with binutils-2.16 and
glibc-2.3.5 we would like to focus on marking these stable as soon as possible.
8. Implementing the AT Program for PPC
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After observing the success of the AMD64 AT program, the PPC team would like to
implement something similar to help with package testing. We would like to
start our program by selecting a few trusted users. We will follow a similar
procedure of having the ATs take the first ebuild quiz. Finally, we will speak
with the AMD64 team for help and suggestions for implementing this program for
our team.

9. LinuxTag/LWE/LSM
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Events are fun! We should bring as diverse hardware as possible and provide
PPC/LiveCDs for the event. We also considered getting t-shirts for the events.
We also learned that Freescale is going to provide some support for LWE.
10. Future Meetings
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We've decided to hold more regular meetings to prevent such long meetings.
The final Sunday of every month at 19UTC will be the PPC meeting. It will be
held in #gentoo-ppc-meeting and is open to all, although the channel is +m
until the end of the meeting when we have an open floor.
11. ppc.gentoo.org site updates
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ppc.gentoo.org site is quite out of date. These things need to be fixed:
1. Updated to reflect current staffing
2. Finish the hardware list
3. Documentation for LiveCD creation
4. Updated information about Gentoo/PPC and show information/handouts
5. Updated news
