Hi, I'm trying to install Gentoo on my new MoBo: ASUS P4P800DeLuxe containing an Intel 865PE chipset with SATA, RAID, GB Ethernet and what not. Problem is that the LiveCD freezes during boot-up. The "even nicer" Gentoo start-up screen (with the thermometer) shows up and stays there till Eternity. The thermometer doesn't move one millimeter (I'm European (:-) The box contains: P4 2.6 MHz 1GB RAM 80GB IDE(boot disk), 120 GB SATA (2dary disk) Radeon 9600Pro

The problem is in the IDE controller AFAIK. I've also tried the
experimental LiveCD with the 2.6.something kernel (from november 20), to
no avail.
Now what? I'd love to see it working on something better than my old P3
box, because I'm deeply impressed with this distro, my utmost respect and
gratitude to all people involved in making this piece of technology.
Does anybody know how to fix this?

Hi Frans,

I bought the Asus ASUS P4P800 (no deluxe) mobo and used an older LiveCD (from August), since I was too lazy to download a new one. My specs:
Onboard 1 GB Ethernet, PCI Intel NIC (100MBit), 2,8GHz P4, 1GB Ram, old Matrox graphics card, 1 15GB disk, 1 60GB disk.

Everything went fine for me, and I *think* I have the same IDE controller
as you have.... I used my Intel NIC (100Mbit) instead of the onboard 1Gbit
NIC (since the old one was still in the machine, and it was recognized
as 'eth0'). Maybe try it with a different
NIC?

I did have a problem last year with another PC, where everything
froze after 5 minutes; this had to do with the box getting too warm
and the processor locking up (after a few bios changes this was easily
fixed).

Hope this helps,
Eelco
