Totem Acually doesn't play anything except mp3's for me
it frankly sux ... i suggest u go with mplayer or xine ...
or gnome-vlc

There's also Lumiere which is in portage. Its a gnome interface to
mplayer. It works OK-ish-ly.

There's always using the standard gui for mplayer...command line
'gmplayer' just add '+gui' to your USE flags I believe
the newer versions are pretty nice. I use it for pretty much everything
video-related. It even has a nice playlist thing for music, tho i use
XMMS for that.
