Once upon a time there was two gif lib versions, one provided by giflib, proprietary (?) with LZW (copyrighted by Unysis AFAIK) compression. The other, libungif, without support to LZW, GPLed. Nowadays the two ebuilds identify the same library, libungif (support LZW know? this is needed anyway?), so why wasn't one of them killed? Some packages ask for one, others for the other, both give the same thing, this could create a mess if you unmerge one of them couldn't?
