Masked means, as you assumed, that it is not considered 'production ready'
under gentoo. Could mean that it hasn't been fully tested yet, could mean
that there are issues
This is something which probably should be in a FAQ, but I couldn't
find any mention of 'Masked' in the searchable documentation.
Can someone explain (or point me to a document which explains) exactly
what the implications of the 'Masked' annotation in entries like

Have a look at /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask

In looking through the stock tree of packages, there are quite a few that
are masked. I've read through what docs there are on masking, but still
have one question:
Is there any way to tell why a particular package is masked?
Thanks in advance,
Roy

I'd guess because of the DVI viewer (kdvi). Try adding -tetex to your use
flags.

Hmm... I noticed that this was for eclipse-sdk-3.0.0_pre5 (no wonder
it's masked) and if I say <=eclipse-sdk-2.1, it only wants about a dozen
packages... with no

How do I find out why a package is masked? I read about package.mask,
but the package I'm trying to get (eclipse-sdk) isn't in there. Perhaps
something eclipse depends on (ant??) being masked results in eclipse
being masked?

I know to check /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask for files that have
been masked, but the package I'm after isn't listed in there.
Where else do I look for this stuff ?? I did try "ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
and --pretend and the package I'm after shows up. Is that why, 'cause
it's considered "unst
Hi,
I am trying to update some packages, but am running into trouble. I
run a stable Gentoo, with a few hand picked exceptions of using masked
packages.
Now, when I want to upgrade tetex I get:
# emerge -pu tetex
!!!All ebuilds that could satisfy "tetex" have been masked.
I understand why t
