I am having a problem with slow DNS resolution on my gentoo system. They tend
to take 5-10 seconds or so and afflict all applications, including ping.

A previous SuSE installation on the same box didn't have this problem, nor
does a Mac currently on the same LAN. The Gentoo box has a fixed IP, while
the mac gets its IP and DNS stuff from the local router by DHCP. However the
same DNS servers are listed in the same order on both machines.

I read somewhere that IPv6 could be the culprit. However I have compiled my
kernel without IPv6 support and I have, to the best of my knowledge, disabled
it in modules.conf.

Does anybody have any other ideas that might work?

Many thanks.
