Thanks for all your help. the issue was that snd-pcm-oss is not being loaded at startup, once I load snd-pcm-oss via insmod snd-pcm-oss the /dev/dsp device is created and everything works. thanks again -arlo- p.s. I don't know why snd-pcm-oss is not loading at start. I get the following error
