I think it can as it seems to be a standard ISC DHCPD version 2.
Try to set
option nis-domain yournisdomain;
in /usr/lib/vmware/configurator/vmnet-dhcpd.conf

Tried that first before disabling the it on the client side and it
didn't work. I could only find mention of setting nis-servers and not
nis-domain on vmware's website. This is fine though.
