I think that one of the bests options to install openoffice is:

emerge app-office/openoffice-bin

Install the binaries because if you install the sources you have to wait
a long time...

if you like see how much memory need the program you can do this:

emerge --search openoffice-bin

And you haver something like that:

 pp-office/openoffice-bin
       Latest version available: 2.0.2
       Latest version installed: 2.0.2
       Size of files: 1,428,961 kB
       Homepage:      http://www.openoffice.org/
       Description:   OpenOffice productivity suite
       License:       LGPL-2
