I have worked around the problem. I unmerged php as it seems that the error
was caused by something in the xmlrpc for php. After doing so, I emerged
libsoup and then emerged php again.

While doing a simple emerge world update, an access violation on
libsoup-2.2.103 happens. It looks like it finishes the compile, but fails to
continue with the install.

From looking at my system, I have:
DISPLAYMANAGER=gdm
in the /etc/conf.d/xdm file. If you change yours to kdm instead of gdm and
make sure it's in the run levels:
rc-update add xdm default
Unless I'm missing something, that should work.
