I just finished doing a reinstall of my amd64 machine (using x86 though) and
upon doing a:
# emerge --update --deep --newuse world
(I'd edited my use flags and done an emerge sync) I got this:
# emerge --update --deep --newuse world

Try a revdep-rebuild and see if it wants to build something.
