It was a typo from my side - the package's name is hal, while the service you
start is named hald.

Supermount does work with USB devices, but make sure you include sync
among the optio
I use KDE 3.4.1 with hald and dbus started - and when I plug my usb based
mp3-mplayer in, KDE takes care of the mounting etc, and a device icon pops up
on my desktop...
It's really, really nice!
Same functionality with the DVD-reader and the CD-recorder when I insert a
disc... :-)
