I may have spoken too soon. Re-installing mysql got me to where I can login to the console but the suggested commands still fail: # mysql -uroot -p Enter password: Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g. Your MySQL connection id is 16 Server version: 5.0.44-log Gentoo
