recently, I searched for a reason why emerge --update is that slow. (And in my eyes, needless slow.) I found a thread[0] on gentoo forum where I found a really helpful hint. emerge --backtrack=0 ... Would do the same job in 99% of the cases but in about 1/5 of the run time. Sadly the thread did not end in a helpful conclusion but maybe it helps to bring that to the discussion again. I even would like to have a update check in nagios for my gentoo boxes too but as it is that slow and consume that much resources, it is to costly.
