Okay, this is I HOPE a simple enough question. I have a virtual server
running on my Win10 Host (not my ideal O/S!) that has a full X
environment on it. I usually connect via Putty(ssh) using VirtualBox's
Host Only network. That's great for text, but how do I set things up so
that I can run X progr

X-forwarding used to work for me but I haven't used it in a while and now I get:
Warning: untrusted X11 forwarding setup failed: xauth key data not generated
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

Not more than usual. I assume your online computers have been secured

I just enabled X-forwarding and I've got a few questions for you guys.
Should I have any security concerns about doing this?
It looks like gimp comes through with an older/blockier version of gtk
or something. Any way to fix that?
I'm starting X-forwarding like 'ssh -XC 192.168.100.1 gimp' and

ah. I didn't think about that. I actually turn off ipv6 in the
beginning, because I hate for things to run that I'm not using.

Your suggestion gave me the idea to run sshd with strace, the output
of which lead me here:

did you ...

one thing I have done in the past is turn up ssh in debug mode:
/usr/sbin/sshd -p 23 -d
then in another terminal
ssh -p 23 $host
once you quit that session, your sshd process will terminate

Hi,
I wish to forward X from machine B to machine A via ssh. Machine A is
running an X server. On machine B I have in sshd_config:
X11Forwarding yes
On machine A I have in ssh_config:
ForwardX11 yes
I can ssh from A to B without problems but when I try to start a
simple application:

Not sure why it would work with -Y but not -X, but in any case if it
works with -Y why not just use that?
But yes, I do use X11 forwarding ov
Did you try to export the display manually?
I also got some problems using -X but it works perfect by using
"export DISPLAY=:0"
maybe that helps.

Is anyone using X-Forwarding over a local wireless connection? I'm
forwarding a couple of light apps and they work fine with -Y but -X is
unusable. I've been trying to use vmware workstation with an XP guest
OS over wireless, but it's no good. Would I have better luck with
vnc?

When i try to start an opengl app remotley via ssh, for example glxgears
i get:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display "localhost:10.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.
allthough glxgears works fine when started locally.
Any ideas ?
