BZZZT wrong! Change DISPLAYMANAGER= in /etc/rc.conf
There is no /etc/init.d/gdm (or kdm) script in gentoo.

Set /etc/rc.conf so that DISPLAYMANAGER=gdm. then the xdm at default
will actually start gdm.
