For those of you interested in learning more about microbiology, may I suggest reading an environmental microbiology text: Brock et al*, a really fine exposition of the microbial world, which is responsible for the mineralization of organic matter in soils and sediments, and the thermodynamic rules that govern it. It is a beautiful and subtle story and Brock is one the all-time best textbooks.
