No idea. Just tried out the sample shapefile you sent me, GeoServer 2.1
on Ubuntu Linux, JDK 1.6.0_24, displays it in a blink of an eye, CPU
usage is barely noticeable.
Attached a sample map.
Long story short, try upgrading to GS 2.1

Hello again,
This morning I replicated 5 datastores from shapefiles on another
Debian server with Geoserver 2.0.2. The same behaviour: after a few
requests the CPU simply goes to 100%. This is most likely a problem
with Geoserver itself, not with the setup.
Thank you,
Luís
Hi,
There are users like us who have been running Geoserver 2.0.2 for months and
hundreds of thousands of requests without ever seeing such a 100% CPU usage. I
trust that your problem is real but is must have something to do with your

I think I've isolated the issue somewhat. A request to a shapefile
layer with a scale higher than 1:2 clogs the server. I'm not
certain yet if this is the case also with PostGIS layers, but
definitely Geoserver struggling with large scales.
My development environment is Ubuntu
I installed GeoServer 2.1 RC1. It installed successfully, but when i click on
WFS in services category, i got the following message.
Oops, something went wrong...
Sorry, something unexpected happened on the server.
Here's an error report you can include in a JIRA bug report about this
issue:

Mustafa,
Geoserver 2.1 has been released now - it is the current stable version.
Suggest you uninstall 2.1RC1 and install Geoserver 2.1.

David
