we got it.
It was the Apache Basic Auth on the root context. It seams, that this
auth request of Apache is passed-through to GeoServer and therefore, the
GeoServer thought, it has to present his Auth also.
So we removed the Basic Auth from Apache and all things work just fine.

Checked, GS is able to load one of theese files alone as a geotiff.
Preview in OL looks ok.
The folder is writeable.
I've done a chmod 777 to be sure completely:)
I've tried adding the initial aster tiff's - same error occurs.

I was trying to use WFS to download a big file of road centerlines. The file
should be around 500Mb.
