I am in the process of designing a map which displays solar energy production
for around 50 regions. Is the geoserver chart extension still being maintained
and does it include bar charts?

Confirmed a bug. Here is the long version.
Through the layer preview geoserver is not accessed through the global
service endpoint, but through a local virtual endpoint. The first time a
request causes something to do GML 3 encoding an internal schema is built
