I would also say that on the web, the user experience is with the client software not with the geoserver backend. Backends like geoserver should be invisible. Our PBE application interacts with arcgis, and really any WMS/WFS server, as well as other kinds of data source (eg TMS). Theoretically

Hi Robert, looks like you ran out of free inodes, despite there's still space left on the device, the file system has all its inodes allocated by those little files. XFS is known to do well, especially if the partition is > 1TB and you use the inode64 mount option:
