Hi,
how can I connect my GeoServer instance to my standalone GeoWebCache
instance?
I found instructions to configure layers in GeoWebCache using
GetCapabilities, but there's no document for connecting GeoServer WMS to
GeoWebCache.

Depending on your exact use case, this might be what you need: Enable "FullWMS"
in GeoWebCache, and use it to produce a so-called "Cascading WMS":

thorny question. In an ideal world we could:
1) Go down in GeoTools and replace gt-jdbc-h2 with h2gis
2) Provide an upgrade path for those using jt-jdbc-h2 to h2gis
3) Find a way to upgrade the GWC disk quota database with the newer H2
4) Find a way to upgrade the KML superoverlay database

I want to achieve the same as if I would have used the integrated
GeoWebCache.

If I understand you correctly (not sure I do, though), I don't think you need
GeoServer at all. Simply enable "fullWMS" in a standalone GeoWebCache
installation, cf. "Support for Regular WMS Clients" here
