The error is due to the large number of classes GeoServer loads,
you have to setup your container to allow for a larger permgen,
see the parameter here:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/production/container.html#optimize-your-jvm
To be clear, it has nothing to do with the amount of data you load,
it's just related to how much functionality you end up using.
