Yeah, just gone through the path environment variable and cleared out some
non-existent paths and viola, GeoServer is now up and running.

the error seems to suggest that your environment variable PATH contains a
path to a not existing / not working device, maybe a removable one?
Try to check and eventually fix the system or user PATH.

I am running into issues getting a GeoServer windows service to start
(ever) - I get a 1053 error.
Digging back I can see this is related to the wrapper, which throws the
following error -
ERROR | wrapper | 2014/05/06 06:20:42 | Unable to expand "Path": A device
attached to the system is not
