Just remove all the xml files from the layergroups folder, restart
Geoserver and you should be fine.

Hi Mauro,
I have not any layersgroups in my original geoserver data dir.
It is strange that I lost some piece because I copied the entire data dir
from the previous release and then I started the new geoserver with that
one.

also when I click on "Layer Groups" I receive a similar error:
org.apache.wicket.WicketRuntimeException: Can't instantiate page using
constructor public org.geoserver.web.data.layergroup.LayerGroupPage() at
org.apache.wicket.session.DefaultPageFactory.createPage(DefaultPageFactory.java:212)

I encountered the same error also upgrading to version 2.4.4 and 2.4.3
The only version that upgraded correctly is 2.3
