2.2.x (from svn) is the way to go.
The only change (thus far), is the ability to use SVG graphics for your
map icons.
I hope to get a week's notice from the uDig and GeoServer communities so
that a GeoToosl 2.2.1 release can be used for uDig 1.1 and/or GeoServer
1.4.0.
