no, geonames doesn't provide a service for mapping placenames. But geonames
delivers you the placename cooridnates in the WGS84 (EPSG:4326 resp.)
system, so that you can map them in geotools. (Of course there are also a
lot of other tools...)
In short all you need is the geonames java library

I found out that with geonames, they do not have software to map the names
to maps in java. Therefore, if i wanted to do this, what kind of tools would
be needed?

Yes, for example if i wanted to create a GIS system whereby i would do a
search query for a place in London say which would then be re-displayed on a
map, something like what you would do in google map, where would i get the
geographiphical data? and how would i store it? Or is the case of me

There is also a Java library, which helps you to access the geonames web
services: http://www.geonames.org/source-code/

GeoTools does not have any way to disambiguate "London" and
