cron sneakily doing the download when the system rebooted. So I hadn't got the
usual email on completion & thereore tried it manually.

Yes, when I get the same error, if you delete the file in error, it then
starts again.
There is no guarantee that it will be better next time, but it stops the
error.
You could also rename the file.
