[Gimp-user] GIMP can't open PNG files? How could that be?

I just installed GIMP 2.6.11 on Windows 7 64-bit, then tried to open a .png file. Alas, instead of the image, I was surprised to see an error message box stating: "Opening C:\Users\me\Pictures\snapshot.png failed: Unknown file type" Huh? How is this possible? I have GIMP 2.6 running perfectly
