It is not really a config problem as I have *View > Preview > Images*
selected. The problem is that only some of the jpgs show up as
thumbnails and no matter what I do, I can't get the ones that don't now
show up [as thumbnails] to show up -- not even creating a new image from
them, as I detailed in my first post.

This is what leads me to believe that there must be some sort of
embedded info in them.
