Because by design any format _not_ a native XCF file _is_ a "second-class" citizen. http://gui.gimp.org/index.php/Save_%2B_export_specification As Ofnuts already pointed out, there is a loss of information when exporting. The thinking/logic is in the linked specification and is a good decision -
