If you move your mouse, that zoom moves around as well. It's good for precision
and not having to zoom in while making selections. On top of that, you can
control the cursor with the arrow keys for further precision.

The easiest way is to install Hugin where you can use the panorama creation
utility to detect the common points and stitch automatically. Note that
stitching two scans is somewhat different from rotating a camera for panoramic
shots, so best to read the tutorial.
