Did you try to use the fuzzy select tool? I just did a rough try at it and
it removed 95+% of the white. Then a little touch-up with the eraser
should do it. You didn't indicate whether you created the image or not.

In a discussion today, a group of us were trying to figure out why when
rotating layers that don't have 100% opacity, go back to totally opaque
when you try to arbitrarily rotate the layers? Is that an expected
behavior? Such behavior makes it difficult to align layers.
