I have figured out what is hapenning. This "https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id"; Google URL is the one that is used to perform the discovery of the actual, unique OpenID url for a user. When you sign up for gitorious using the above URL the discovery process redirects back to gitorious.or

I used to always login to gitorious.org using the OpenID URL linked to my Google account, but recently when I tried it told me to "finalize my account" and asked me to register. That's odd, as I've had an account for nearly two years (https://gitorious.org/~jwakely) and have always used OpenID
