Which version of glusterfs are you using?
Did you restart the glusterfsd server on 192.168.1.40 after
creating the directories? (to rule out mkdirs contributing to
the writes data)
apparently just the find and ls are creating the writes?

I'm having trouble compiling gluster 1.4 with bdb. Below is the error, is

Can you try out with an higher transport-timeout? Currently you are having
transport-timeout configured to 30s. Can you progressively increase the
transport timeout and observe the behaviour? I think 180s can be kept as the
ceiling.
