Towards end of this year, we will be introducing snapshot, hsm, dedup ... as
GlusterFS
translators. It is better to wait for that one. Until then, Amanda like backup
solution
over mounted GlusterFS volume is a better approach.

Assuming the underlying FS itself is consistent (which is by no means
guaranteed in snapshotting!), the out of data volume would eventually
get up to date through use.

But if I want to use LVM snapshots underneath glusterfs volumes (on

Hi Onyx,
GlusterFS volumes are file based. LVM requires block based
store. You cannot have LVM over GlusterFS. I am assuming

Has anyone ever tested LVM on top of a glusterfs volume? Would this even
be possible?
I'm interested because of the snapshot feature of LVM.
Thanks!

Gluster(HPC) is a completely different project than GlusterFS.
GlusterHPC deals with OS replication across systems for which LVM/RAID
support is not yet present. GlusterFS has absolutely on issues with
underlying LVM/RAID

I just realized.
That is the Gluster FAQ, not the GlusterFS FAQ.
So LVM/RAID is not recommended for the Platform, which is different from the
Filesystem.

The FAQ in the GlusterFS wiki says as much.
http://gluster.org/docs/index.php/Gluster_FAQ
"Distributions should be installed without LVM/Software Raid. Support for
LVM/SW Raid is being added currently."
I can confirm that software RAID plays nice enough. However, I have not tested
with LVM.
Hi Danson
GlusterFS works over other filesystems, so you can have LVM/RAID etc
underneath. Which part of FAQ says that lvm/raid doesnt work with glusterfs?

Hi All,
What is meant by the note in the FAQ that glusterFS doesn't work with
LVM and md? When I compiled and ran glusterFS, I had software raid5 on
my disks with lvm on top of the raid. I then exported a directory in
one of the reiserfs formatted lvm partitions and it seemed to work
fine.
