Ok, so you are not short of memory!
Your mount command suggests you are using the Fuse client, is it just
the gNFS server that fails? That shouldn't affect the Fuse clients.
I haven't worked out how much memory the gNFS server is supposed to use
but on a test system with 64GB, it uses 16GB.

glusterfs is using ~ 5% of memory (24GB total) and glusterfsd is using < 1%
The I/O cache size (performance.cache-size) is 1GB.
