post clearly says the problem doesn't exist with Chrome or Firefox. The
problem is only present with IE.

I just solved this problem on my laptop. For some reason, Gmail is
recognizing my "print screen" key as the "insert" key. Try to press print
screen and it might disable overtype. It worked for me.

Since gmail and hotmail have made it impossible for me to access my
account(s), I need to find an alternative where I'll be treated
intelligently. All I want to do is access an email account without jumping
through impossible hoops (sound familiar?). Are there any alternatives
that work like

I'm guessing that Google uses some scripting to disable that, ie it is done
programmatically. I'm not sure how they're doing it though, not using the
autocomplete="off" attribute and it's not JavaScript.
