Have you actually tried this?
Because when I do this, I can see LCP/IPCP/CHAP/PAP/MS-CHAP stuff
going on. It seems pretty straightforward to me.

I have installed two AceNIC (gigabit Enet) PCI cards
in a machine I'm working with and I've cabled them
together by connecting each one's Tx port to the
other's Rx port. The driver seems to be happy with
what it finds and the cards seem to be aware of each
other on the link:
