I have a Dell laptop, that should be running XP, and is less than a year old.
This morning, it decided that there was a file missing and it won't completely
boot. It doesn't even want to do a SAFE boot. I put in XP's

I copied the Knoppix kit to my desktop, made a CD and booted off that. Once
I plugged in my USB external disk, I was able to do a simple drag copy.
When I plugged the USB disk into my XP desktop, I was able to open some
random files
