My old 486 didn't have a builtin CDROM. I had an Adaptec 1542b and an external SCSI CD ROM. Redhat, Mandrake, etc all work just fine with that setup. The CD can be from a mac or sun as well. Any SCSI CD-ROM drive will work with CDs in the boxed set (stamped). Older drives can have issues
