This is known and has already been fixed in the 1.6 CVS branch, but it
is unlikely that a 1.6.9 will be released.

So long as you do not use any of the new-in-1.[78] features,
1.6 should be able to read your datafile just fine. In other
words, so long as you don't use Scheduled Transactions or any
of the Business Accounting features, 1.6 should read it fine.

The PERL hooks are effectively gone. You can, however, use guile.
Right now there is no real documentation on the APIs except for the
actual code.
