the following problem:
I failed to record the receipt of £40 via BACS on 9th December
On 13th December I recorded the deposit of a cheque for £40 in the same account.
My bank statement for the month to 16th Decemb

That version can read 3.x files, so if you have to step backwards for any

Log on to your GnuCash mailman account and change your preferences. There is an
option to only receive one copy if you are also in the To: or CC: fields.
Mailman can’t stop the independently sent copies, but it won’t send you one
from itself in that case.

Time to catch up I've been using 2.6 for a while, but want to get to
3.8.
Do I need to go via 3.0 with a 'check & repair' before going to 3.8, or can
I leap directly to 3.8?

Interesting idea, there certainly is a bewildering range of reports to choose
from :-)
Alternatively, I could dig into writing my own report, I know scheme fairly
well, so I guess that should be doable as well.

How to handle the transition from one year to the next
What reports provide the information I
I still don't know what the underlying problem was, but I was able to get
it working by uninstalling Strawbery Perl entirely, reinstalling it, and
then running GnuCash's installation script.
The previous version was “perl 5, version 30, subversion 0 (v5.30.0)”. The
