Consider adjusting your preferences for Mac updates. I had a similar
problem years ago and turned off automatic installing updates. I still
get a notification and then it nags me if I don't get to it manually,
but that allows me to decide when to update and avoid losing data that

Experience can be a harsh teacher. You could print a report of those
transactions to PDF then try screen scraping them after you go back to 5.1,
but I don't hold out much hope for success.

If you turn off compression, you will be able to save the file.
Also, I have pulled down the first 9 patches to 5.2 and can verify that
on my Ubuntu box the file save to a compressed file does work.
