An idea to take or leave as you like: one way to look at the recent Elsevier
self-archiving policy change is that this could actually work against the
company in terms of attracting authors. If scholars are concerned about the
embargoes, whether due to policy or missing out on the benefits of open access,
there are a great many more options today than there were a few years ago. The
Sherpa RoMEO list can help authors find journals and publishers with less
onerous embargo periods. Perhaps some of the smaller publishers, open access or
not, could grow their portfolios through more generous author policies? Plus
there are more than 10 thousand fully open access journals listed in DOAJ, and
for authors without a lot of cash to pay for APCs, two thirds of these journals
do not have APCs. In other words, this could be an educational opportunity.

just a thought.
