** apologies for cross-posting - possibly of interest ** At least two traditional scholarly publishers have found a means to offer free services to authors as well as readers, through partnerships with sponsoring institutions (usually universities) and/or societies.
About 40% of SpringerOpen titles are fully sponsored so that authors do not have to pay article processing fees. There are two aspects of what SpringerOpen is doing that are worth looking at as potential models for other publishers: 1) a number of sponsors have clear language indicating the sponsorship model and making it very clear that authors do not pay and 2) SpringerOpen's "About the Journal" websites often include a tab highlighting the sponsor, which can be useful to provide value back to the sponsoring institution or society in the form of promotion of their work.
