PENSION FOR LIBERATION FIGHTERS: A long-standing demand of freedom fighters
of the Goa Liberation struggle was last night fulfilled with the Union
Cabinet deciding to grant pension to 3,500 participants in the second phase
of the movement in 1954-55. A cabinet meeting, presided over by Prime
Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, approved the pension which would be granted
to them within the next 15 days. This would cost the exchequer Rs.16.13
crore annually towards pension and dearness allowance and an additional
Rs.7 crore per year on account of complimentary railway passes. (PTI report

MAKE KONKANI COMPULSORY FOR JOBS: Social thinker and editor of "Sunaprant",
Mr Uday Bhembre, has demanded that the provision making knowledge of
Konkani compulsory in government as well as private recruitments be
strictly implemented in order to safeguard the interest of the local
unemployed youth. Mr Bhembre was delivering his keynote address at a
function organised by the Goa Konkani Academy and Bardez Konkani Asmitai
Kendra, to celebrate Raj Bhas Dis (Official Language Day) at the Hanuman
Natyagraha, Mapusa, on February 4. (H)
LET BOTH MARATHI AND KONKANI PROSPER, SAYS KHALAP: "The development of
Konkani language does not depend upon the status given to it by any law,
but on its use by people at all levels, Mr Ramakant Khalap said, adding
that it Konkani had suffered today, it is because of "konkaniwadis" who
kicked away the golden opportunity to propagate Konkani language through
Konkani education at all levels. This has resulted in majority of the
students dropping out of schools, without proper knowledge of Konkani,
Marathi or even English language and ending up as peons, cooks, waiters and
butlers, or tuning into vagabonds and castaways, open to all vices, he

LOCK-OUT AT CARMONA PANCHAYAT: When panch members arrived at the panchayat
ghar to elect a new Sarpanch yesterday (Feb 4) they were in for a big
surprise. Some miscreants had locked them out by putting additional locks
on the door. The post of Sarpanch for Carmona panchayat had fallen vacant
after the incumbent Johnny Rebello had resigned from office. (GT)
BABY CHOKES TO DEATH: In a tragic incident, a six-month-old baby, Anurag
Gopinath Parab, died on February 4, after he choked on the plastic nipple
of a feeding bottle, when the nipple became loose and got wedged in his
throat. The frantic mother and neighbours tried their best to remove the
nipple from the throat. When all efforts failed, they tried to rush the
baby to the Bicholim Health Centre. The baby, however, died on the way to
the hospital. (H)
ACCUSED SLIPS AWAY: An accused, Dola Singh, who was arrested for illegally
possessing charas escaped from the police clutches at the Calangute police
station on Monday night. He was arrested on Monday afternoon for possessing
1.3 kg of charas. (GT)
RS.5.5 LAKH JEWELLERY STOLEN: Jewellery worth around Rs.5.5 lakh was stolen
from the bungalow of Anthony Coutinho at Nagali Hill colony, Dona Paula, in
a daring day light robbery which occurred between 11.30 am and 12 noon on
Tuesday, when the wife of Coutinho and the maid were present on the ground
floor of the bungalow. (H
SONIA TELLS CONG LEADERS TO UNITE: If the State Congress leaders expected
some words of advice from Congress president and Leader of Opposition Sonia
Gandhi, they had it coming loud, clear and blunt. "Get united or face the
consequences," was the terse message by Gandhi, sending a strong message to
State Congress leaders during her brief stopover at the Dabolim airport on

LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR DR TITHI TAVORA'S KILLERS: The Panjim Bench of the
Bombay High Court confirmed the life imprisonment sentence on the killers
of Dr Tithi Tavora in Panjim. On the night of September 17, 1998. Rajkumar
Mukerjee of Calcutta, and Laxman Nair of Kerala, the cook and dishwater of
her restaurant, came to her on the pretext of not feeling well, and
strangled her. The accused were caught two days later in Vasco. (H)
SPECIAL INFO SECRETARY: Director of Information and Publicity, KV
Prabhugaonkar, has been posted as special secretary (Information) to
Government at the Secretariat, Panaji, with immediate effect. Rajesh Singh,
press liaison officer (Group A) to Chief Minister, will continue to hold
the charge of post of the director of information and publicity in addition
to his own duties and until further orders. (GT)
A MONDAY OF UN-NATURAL DEATHS: Satish Hulenad, 10, a resident of
Xeldem-Quepem, died after he accidentally drowned in a canal while he was
playing near it. Laxmi Akula, 45, of Chimbel, who had consumed poison at
her residence died at the GMC while undergoing treatment. Leela Gawade ,
53, of Pissurlem, committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her
residence. One Eulia Godinho, 58, of Nerul, was found dead at her
residence. (GT)
GANESHPURI AS TOURIST SPOT: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced that
the government would develop Ganesh temple campus at Ganeshpuri-Mapusa as a
tourist spot by spending Rs.1 crore. (GT)
DEVELOP TRADITIONAL ART: The Governor, Mr Kidar Nath Sahani, while speaking
as the chief guest at the annual day celebrations of Bal Bhavan. Stressed
the need to develop traditional art and crafts of Goa to project the
identity of the land. This will also create employment opportunities to

GOAN MAHABHARATA: "We should all demand that Konkani should be treated with
the respect due to her. Konkani may be the younger sister or the niece but
Goa is her home. Sisters and aunts and uncles, from across the border, have
no right to heap indignities on her at her home. The Chief Minister is the
head of the household and must give the mother of all Goans the respect

GOVT "HARASSING" ME: Calangute MLA, Agnelo Fernandes, has said he is being
"harassed" by the administration for being the thorn in the flesh of the
government and vociferously opposing its "sinister" projects in his

Club won the AICF-Wipro Younger Super Genius Chess Championship for girls
organised by Wipro, at Kochi in Kerala. A student of Mary Immaculate Girls
High School, Panjim, Shradha did extremely well to finish at the top in a
