HELMET ISSUE: MAG TO CHALK OUT PLAN OF ACTION ON DEC 22
An emergency meeting of the Motorcycle Action Group ( MAG) will be held on
Sunday, 22nd December, to chalk out a plan of action to strongly oppose
fresh moves by the authorities to make use of Helmets mandatory.
The Convenor of Motorcycle Action Group ( MAG), Premanand A. Lotlikar,
today stated that two-wheeler riders would stand united to oppose any fresh
moves to make the use of Helmets mandatory and that Goans were capable of
deciding for themselves whether to wear a helmet or not.
Mr. Lotlikar stated that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and then Transport
Minister Pandurang Raut had last year shown understanding on the helmet
issue and the issue was resolved once and for all by an amendment to the
the Motor Vehicle Rules.
Mr. Lotlikar, however, alleged that certain police and transport department
Officials are for monetary gains conniving with the Helmet Manufacturer's
lobby and trying to once again make use of helmets by two-wheeler riders
and pillion passengers mandatory.
Mr. Lotlikar further stated that based on experience and evidence,
mandatory helmet laws do not make sense and that it should be left to the
rider to decide whether to use a helmet or not. Mr. Lotlikar has urged the
Goa Government to scrap the fresh move of mandatory helmets or brace itself
for a statewide public agitation in protest against the proposed move by
the authorities to make the use of helmets by two wheeler riders and
pillion passengers mandatory.
