Hoteliers warned against overcharging tourists
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The director of tourism, Mr N Suryanara-yana, has warned hoteliers
against charging rates higher than those approved by the prescribed
authority under Goa Registration Tourist Trade Act, 1982, during the peak
tourist season, the Christmas and New Year festivities.

A circular issued by the tourism department to the hoteliers has warned them
that legal action, as per the provision of Clause 26 of Goa Registration of Tourist
Trade Act and the rules framed thereunder, would be taken against those
found charging tariff higher than approved.

Mr Suryanarayana informed The Navhind Times that there was a heavy demand
for accommodation from tourists from India as well as foreigners during the
festive season and it has been brought to his notice that some hoteliers
were taking advantage of the demand and charging the customers rates
higher than prescribed, which was against the tourist Act.

The tourism director further said that the hoteliers should not try to kill the goose
that lays golden eggs and fleece the tourists during the peak season. He said
overcharging the tourists was a short-term gain which could kill the tourism
industry as the tourists may not visit the state again after their bitter experience.

He also said that the flow of foreign tourists have increased by 15 per cent
since the beginning of tourist season, as compared to tourists arrival
during the same period last year, and that demand for accommodation
has increased over the last few days.

Mr Suryanarayana further said that a noble Russian lady, Princess Golitsina
from Moscow, with her entourage, would be in the state on the eve of New Year,
as a special guest of Indian ambassador to Russia.

The tourism director said that so far 95 charter flights have landed in the state
bringing in 29,000 tourists mostly from European countries since the beginning
of tourist season. He also said that this year the number of charter flights
was likely to touch 400 as compared to 279 last year.
